Following Traces
People leave marks – or traces. Traces allude to stories of the past. The exhibition building reveals signs of its history. Prison inmates as well as visitors left their traces. I would like to deal with the “trace” subject using two media, possibly in a room.
Picture: Spuren bewusst machen (Making people aware of the traces)
In response to the signs of the room I present documents of the traces left by the outside world. I will be using photos or drawings to reflect the traces found in the building. Thereby the traces in the building can be experienced.
Sound: Spuren reinigen (Clearing traces)
Traces are evidence of authentic history. The stream of time leaves traces, even though the actual events are invisible. Stone represents a visible trace. The stone of the prison wall, the stone of ancient fragments ... petrified history. The invisible traces are the infelt narrowness, darkness, deepness and solidness of the stone and the history as a prison. The premises must be refilled with air and energy to be able to breathe again.
Water washes the traces away and thus creates “open space“ for new traces und a new history. Symbolically this will be done using a sound installation playing back the sound of a flowing river recorded in a natural landscape.
Technical Requirements:
• 1 CD-Player with 2 - 4 small monitor boxes
may be placed in 4 corners of the room or somewhere hidden
• electrical connections
• for photographs: wooden squares to put photos on it. (can be done, when i am there)
Spatiality:
• a room with traces or inscriptions on the walls
• written typography on the wall
